The joy of volunteering at Pehchaan The Street School

Volunteering, a profound word that hits hard inside your mind when you think about it. People do volunteer for various causes including addressing social issues, supporting local organizations or simply help others to make a difference in this planet. So, when it comes to education, its impact becomes immense. Adding volunteering with education not only creates a passion, but also opens new opportunities ahead of everyone to share joy, emotions through effective communication.

Pehchaan The Street School is such an organization committed to ensuring underprivileged children has the access of learning. Here at Pehchaan The Street School, there are many volunteers, whose main goal is to help the students getting valuable knowledge and skills. For most of the volunteers, working at Pehchaan is a turning point in their lives, as it provides an opportunity to not only educate but also to gain from experiences of resilience and hope. The activities of the volunteers runs on the momentum that education is a basic right for a children, it should not be limited among few. The classes here held in places like parks or temporary classrooms.

Volunteering at Pehchaan is an active experience that demands commitment, imagination, and perseverance. A volunteer's duties here involve imparting lessons in Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies, providing basic knowledge that can assist children in mainstream education. At Pehchaan The Street School many students belong from underprivileged conditions, which makes it difficult for them to access to regular education. That’s why the volunteers here must ensure that they use techniques like telling stories, playing games and showing visual elements to interact with the students. Beside this, they often organize events like sports, arts and music to introduce the students to the practical world. Some volunteers further help raise awareness about the value of education among local communities and families.

Each volunteer at Pehchaan has a special and enriching experience. One of the most inspiring things about volunteering is seeing the resilience and energy of children who are willing to learn despite the huge challenges they are going through. For most volunteers, the first day is a combination of excitement and apprehension. Getting to know the children, learning about their backgrounds, and identifying the appropriate teaching style can be daunting. But the authentic smiles and warm welcomes from the students immediately melt any fears.

Some of the volunteers shared their valuable experience while working with Pehchaan The Street School, let’s take a look at them: -

Anshita, Amity University, Noida – “I had the fortunate experience of visiting Pehchaan The Street School campuses for a few months now, and to say it was a fulfilling and enriching experience would be an understatement, since it not just helps to fulfil my duties better, but also understand myself as a better person as a psychologist, a member of society. Also, it given me insights how children mindset or students mindset work typically in various ways. So, it was indeed a great experience, thanks to our authorities there and our mentors who helped everybody there, they guided me through many obstacles and corrected my few mistakes also during the course of my tenure. So, anybody looking for an opportunity to visit Pehchaan The Street School, please grab it at the earliest. It was a once in a life time experience for me and no doubt it was great. And lastly, the organisation is doing a great initiative, so kudos to them, thank you.”

Shruti Shavastav, Christ University: - “I have been a part of Pehchaan The Street School since last three months, and I loved my experience here. The kids are so cute and curious about everything. By teaching them, I also learnt so many things and it’s a two-way learning where I am also learning while teaching them. The students have shown me so much love that it’s a little difficult to now go back and not seeing them anymore. So, my experience has been very good and the organisation is doing a lot on everything on the gates, it’s actually great.”

Radha, Christ University: - “I am a student of Psychology and I have been volunteering at Pehchaan The Street School for the last 15 weeks. My experience over here has been really great, There was a time when I was thinking what I am going to teach to the students and it was always a surprise to me how the way they come up with things. Every experience while I am going back home, I am travelling, and thinking about which way the kids said this and that really inspired me. Initially I was thinking about what difference it is going to make, how much time I will be able to do, what difference is 30 hours is going to make. If someone is considering like this, please do not think this way because the moment you come here and the students came running towards you, they greet you. Often, they tell you I am able to do this because of you, that is the best feeling. So, every little contribution you can make it feel so so good. If anyone thinking of joining come here, there are so many people who actually want to make a change and be a part of it.”

Himanshu, Law student, IP University: - “I got to know about Pehchaan The Street School from a friend, I have been working here for two months now. And it has been a lovely experience working here. One thing I like to say is that interacting with students paves a way to relive your childhood once more and at the same time you can help them to teach, you can be a part of their life. You can impact their life for profound changes and you know when they grow up, they always remember you as their mentor or teacher. So, I would just say that you should visit Pehchaan The Street School for once, if not teaching them at least interact with them and help them as you can.”

Volunteering is a satisfying experience, yet it is also fraught with difficulties. The children may not be English or Hindi speakers, and communication will therefore be a problem at first. Pehchaan The Street School functions with limited standard textbooks and resources used in regular schools, so volunteers must be clever. It is heart-wrenching to hear of the struggles faced by the students, and volunteers find the emotional load too much at times. Despite the challenges, there are numerous moments of joy and success. Seeing a child write their name for the first time, solve a math problem independently, or discuss their dreams confidently makes all the efforts worthwhile. Perhaps the most touching experience is when old students come back as volunteers, a proof of the success of Pehchaan's work.

Volunteering at Pehchaan is not merely teaching; it is a learning experience in itself. It instills empathy and patience, making volunteers realize the plight of poor children. Every student learns in a different way, so volunteers have to adjust their teaching style according to the student’s needs. The experience also instills the belief that even small gestures of kindness and support can go a long way affecting a good change in a child's life.

For those who want to make a positive impact, becoming a volunteer at Pehchaan is can be the path forward. Prospective volunteers can contact them through their site or social media groups to find out about existing volunteer programs. First-time volunteers usually go through an orientation session during which they are informed about the aims of the organization, instructional methods, and expectations. Despite having flexibility, consistency is critical if volunteers are to form solid relationships with children. Those who cannot make a teaching commitment can be used to help with fundraising, administrative tasks, or raising awareness about the program.

In the upcoming years, Pehchaan The Street School will do more than ever to support their student’s education. They believe that socio-economic constraints can no longer block the pathway to a student’s brighter future. And they are fully dependent on donors, volunteers from people or well-wishers like you. A little donation will help us to create a way better future of those 1600 students. Here you are not just donating money, you are also investing into the huge pool of future talents of our country. So please don’t hesitate any longer and please donate to us to secure a student’s future who will be our beloved country’s future.
