Mizo Sniper Jeje announced his retirement
Jeje Lalpekhlua, one of the most popular football players in India, announced his retirement from professional football on 17th February, 2023. The 32-year-old striker, who played for Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League, cited injuries as the reason for this tough decision.
Jeje Lalpekhlua, hails from Mizoram, a state in the Northeast India. He started his football career at a very young age and played for various clubs in his home state before joining Pune FC in 2008. Throughout his professional career he played for various clubs accross the country including Dempo, Mohun Bagan, Chennaiyin FC, East Bengal. During his young age, he played for Indian u19 and u23 football team.
He made his debut for the senior Indian football team in 2011 and quickly established himself as one of the best strikers in the country alongside teammate Sunil Chhetri. His career highlights include winning the Indian Super League twice with Chennaiyin FC in 2015 and 2017-18. He also won I-League and Federation Cup in the jersey of Mohun Bagan in 2014-15 and 2015-16 respectively. He helped India to win SAFF Championship and Intercontinental Cup twice.
Jeje Lalpekhlua was known for his speedy run towards the box, agility and excellent finishing skills. In international football, he scored a total of 23 goals in 56 appearances for the Indian National team, making him the fourth-highest scorer in the country's football history. He is the second-highest Indian goalscorer in ISL history and the record highest scorer for Chennaiyin FC.
However, injuries took a toll on Jeje Lalpekhlua's career in recent years. He suffered a knee injury in 2019 that kept him out of action for almost a year, and he struggled to regain his lost form after returning to the field. He played only seven matches for East Bengal in the 2020-21 ISL season and scored only one goal for them. His retirement comes as a blow to Indian football fans, who have been eagerly waiting for him to make a strong comeback. It serves as a reminder of the physical demands of professional football and the toll it can take on players' bodies.
In a statement announcing his retirement, Jeje Lalpekhlua said, "I will in the near future share with you all about my next chapter in life. I look forward to spend time with my family, something I have not got to do for many years." His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian football. He will be remembered as one of the greatest football players India have ever produced and a role model for aspiring young players who wants to grow career in football.
